The Arbeitsstelle Historische Stereotypenforschung (AHS) – centre for historical stereotype research – at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg focuses on the history of stereotypes in an international context. Headed by Professor Hans Henning Hahn the centre has initialised and conducted research especially in Middle and Eastern Europe and cooperated – among others – with researchers from Poland, Czechia and Slovakia.
The AHS’ main focus lies on the role stereotypes play in social discourses and public discussions. This also includes the correlation of stereotypes, identity building processes and nation building, stereotypes as political instruments and the role of stereotypes in cultural transfer.
The centre for historical stereotype research has an interdisciplinary approach and brings together researchers from different disciplines.
